Bulls on Parade – Rage Against the Machine

She put the shifter into gear and slowly rumbled the Trans Am towards Melrose. As the auto cruised along, her partner tapped her fingers against the shotgun draped across her lap.

“Not bad,” Amy said, gesturing towards the radio. “Very fitting.”

Lea looked over and cast some amusement. She glanced back when the light turned green, then put the Trans Am into first and gave it a decent amount of gas. The vehicle’s widened wheels carved the corner, and out of the turn, she opened up the throttle.

“Holy shit!” Amy grunted, momentum compressing her virtual body.

Lea couldn’t help but laugh. This battle hardened solider, so flushed with excitement. Too funny.

The engine’s roar drowned out the radio, so she gave the volume knob another crank. Things stayed this way for some time—her shifting gears and weaving through traffic, Amy watching the city dart by her window.

Lea nodded. Pretty awesome. Two badass chicks, driving around in a badass car, listening to badass music.

Like her previous cruise, she found something unbelievably liberating about this. Driving around amounted to total freedom, an activity where her life, and everything associated therein, simply didn’t matter. And while she enjoyed sharing this moment with her crime partner, what kind of magic might unfold if the person alongside was her romantic partner?

She smirked while recalling her last romantic partner, the one who knifed her to death. That fairytale didn’t exactly have a storybook ending. And given the disastrous outcome, could she still trust men in ways beyond friendship?

She hoped so. She adored forming and maintaining romantic bonds. But maybe she should postpone the question until after she worked the vigilantism from her system. And besides, with no potentials hanging around, why even consider—

“Uh,” Amy broke in, “the light’s green.”

Lea refocused and found herself idling when she should’ve been moving. “Shit,” she said, slipping the shifter into gear. “Sorry about that.”

An impatient car honked behind them.

Amy beamed while working the pump on her shotgun. Noticing this, Lea considered pulling her partner’s reins. Instead, she stepped on the accelerator and left the restless car in their digital dust. Amy pouted.

They continued up Sunset, entering the affluent part of town where massive estates flanked either side.

“Something on your mind?” Amy asked.

Lea glanced over, but only for a second before returning her attention to the road. She wanted to explain her mental lapse, but the person beside her wasn’t the proper sounding board. She answered nonetheless.

“Do relationships matter to you?”

Amy lifted her shotgun, thereby showing what truly mattered.

Lea shook her head. Yup. Amy wasn’t the best person for this conversation.

After another bout of silence, Amy spoke. “I don’t trust people very easily.”

“Because of your family?”

“My family? My family’s great. They’re a loving group of people who I care deeply for. And our bond is strong because we see each other often… on Ares.”

Lea huffed a breath. Amy was referring to her War World platoon and dodging the question. But that was fine because she wasn’t going to pressure Amy into answering.
